In the far northeastern portion of the county, is a beautiful valley & community called Salacoa. As pioneers came west into Georgia in the early 1800s, they would have entered Cherokee country, the future Cass County via this general area. One group came from Virginia, and thus the alternant name for this area was “Little Virginia”.
Though most of the region is/was located in Cherokee County, the most western area along Salacoa Creek is located in Bartow County. It was a most fertile area, and the original pioneers planted tobacco. It had churches, stores & schools and many families who have lived there for generations. Today, it is known for its famous Brangus Cattle herd.
This area was documented in a book by a local author whose family came thru and lived in Salacoa. Frances E. Adair wrote the manuscript of her mother’s life in the early 1900s and in 1984, the President of Reinhardt College found the writings and published the book, A Little Leaven.
