Bartow County, previously Cass County, previously Cherokee County, previously Cherokee country, had a number of Cherokees living here when the order was made to collect all remaining Cherokees and send then West to Indian country.

Research was begun a number of years ago to determine whether Bartow (aka Cass) County was a staging ground for those living in the area. Ft Means is that stockade, that fort that was located on the edge of Cass & Floyd counties and evidence shows that a number of Cherokees were corralled here before being sent north to Red Clay and the walk to Arkansas & Oklahoma.

The National Park service has tentatively accepted the application & evidence to support the request for a Historical Marker at the perceived site off of the Rome Rd, west of Kingston.
