In 1850, Emsley Stegall erected a log building of the Alabama Road near his home in Emerson (near the intersection of Puckett Rd) which was used for religious meetings of all denominations, schoolhouse and public gatherings. A few years later, he built a building on Lot 905, which was larger and used for the same purpose and it was called Stegalls Chapel.
Dr William Felton, Robert Jones & Sam Smith preached there regularly. After a stirring revival in 1873, the building was deeded over to the Methodist church and was known as Stegalls Methodist Church.
