BIG POND

The first Big Pond School was in existence prior to 1888 and served the Big Pond community until 1917. It was said to have two rooms, however its exact location is unknown. Minutes of the Bartow County Board of Education dated December 5, 1916, state “the Board agreed to the change of locations a year ago for the new school house for Big Pond to the site of the old Henderson School House”. Just a year prior on December 14, 1915, Mr. Grogan and Mr. Morgan, Trustees of Big Pond appeared before the Board advising that a location had been secured for a new school and that $225 had been pledged towards construction. The new school located at the intersection of Old Alabama Road and Big Pond Road was planned to Board specifications of that time period and included two rooms. This school closed after consolidation with Taylorsville in 1937. BCBE minutes of February 1, 1938 show that both Big Pond and Cross Roads schools were given to the Trustees of Taylorsville for disposition.
